Hydroseeding is an excellent way to establish new grass. It combines Seed with Mulch, Fertilizer and a Glue to stick the mixture in place. Great for Lawns, Roadside Applications, and Erosion Control. The seed is completely surrounded by everything it needs to grow.
We offer a variety of seed blends to suit your needs. Blends designed with the harsh Northern Alberta winters in mind. Have a lawn or turf that's tailored for the site conditions you have. We also have options that allow us to seed directly over clay soils with no topsoil required. First we spray on a topsoil replacement and then Hydroseed over top. This process saves the cost of importing topsoil and spreading it. The product is thermaly refined ensures it is weed free, so there is no worry about bringing any weed seeds to your site.
We would be more than happy to hear from you and answer any questions you may have. We offer free quotes and consultations. We can provide you with the information and advice you need to make your next project a success.
The prep required for Hydroseeding and Sod are identical. Four inches of topsoil is ideal for establishing healthy turf. The surface should be smooth and free of all stones, existing vegetation and debris. Should you use a herbicide choose one that is non residual such as Roundup. When topsoil is properly prepped you should leave a footprint but your heel should not sink.
After the application the new lawn will require watering twice per day for 2-3 weeks. Watering in the early morning and late evening is ideal as you lose less water to wind and sun. Ideally the mulch material should be kept moist at all times. If there is a heavy ran in the forecast hold off on watering. Never water to the point where there is water pooling or running off. Spring and Fall are the ideal times to Hydroseed as conditions are cooler, however if you have a reliable water source you can seed at any time. We have seeded several properties with restricted access to water with good results, ideally these properties would be done in the spring or fall. Our Home Grown grass blend is well suited to dry conditions and is designed to give you a lush durable lawn that with proper maintenance will last for years to come.
You should expect to mow your lawn within the first 4-6 weeks after the application. When mowing new lawn you want to ensure that your blades are sharp. Dull blades can pull and damage young grass blades. Try to plan your first mowing for cooler weather. Adjust your mower height to remove about 1/3 of the grasses length. Leaving new grasses longer will ensure that there is plenty of blade to provide energy to the root. If you like your lawn shorter, step it down slowly over time. An application of a higher Nitrogen fertilizer should be applied to the lawn approximately 6-8 weeks after application. We have packages which include the after fertilizing should you like us to take care of it.
Do not apply any herbicides to new young grass. It is very easy to kill young grass even with selective herbicides. All topsoil contains weed seeds. These seeds are faster to germinate than the grass seeds. You will see weeds in your new lawn. This is normal, and actually beneficial to the grass as It provides cover for the young grass and stabilizes the soil. As the grass establishes it will begin to choke out the weeds. Most weeds do not tolerate mowing, so as you mow the lawn the weeds will die off. Should you still have too many weeds after one full growing season, you may need to use a selective herbicide to kill them.
